About Me

Hello, All!

My name is Rebecca and I live in the lovely city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa is a great city to live in and I very much enjoy it here (though I sometimes think of moving back to Tennessee.)

My daughter is grown and now it's just me and my awesome dog! Her name is Abigail and she's a rescue. The vet thinks she's half black lab and half border collie. She looks like a smallish black lab and acts like a border collie. And let me tell you, she is one smart dog!

Hmmm . . . I am a self-employed interpreter and have been for about 20 yrs. I love it. I love interpreting and I love being self-employed. I sometimes wonder about the greener grass on the other side of the fence but . . . So far I haven't wandered over there.

I am a devout Catholic and am active in my church. I attend an Hispanic church and, of course, go to mass but also interpret for an afternoon mass, teach an ASL class, and volunteer wherever needed. When I think about moving, it's my church that keeps me here. I started attending an Hispanic church to learn /practice Spanish and then just fell in love with it.

And so, I study Spanish. My tutor lives in Venezuela and we meet on Zoom. I also read a lot, and run with my dog. I love my dog.

I adore puns, corny jokes, and word play. I do not adore bawdy or hurtful so-called humor.

Well, I can't really think of anything else. Perhaps after I've been here a while I'll think of something else to add.

I'm looking forward to swaps! It sounds so fun!

Favorite Music

Lately I've just been listening to Spanish-language music.

I can't really say that I have favorite groups as much as I have favorite songs.
I love a few Cuarteto de Nos song such as: Ya No Sé qué Hacer Conmigo, La Bestia, Cuando Sea Grande, Así Soy Yo.

I LOVE: Dios Nunca Muere by Sylvana Estrada Me Quedo Contigo by Rosalia Resucito by PedroCriado Me Gustas Mucho by both Viejas Locas and Vale Acevedo Kumbala by La Maldita Vecindad No Soy de Aquí Ni Soy de Allá by Jorge Cafrune And Manu Negret's covers of Almohada and Tu Falta de Querer.

I think the most stirring músic ever written are one particular version of Resucito, Swan Lake theme, the first 2 songs of Carmina Burana, and a couple of things by Gustav Mahler that I can't remember right now.

Love Mahler, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Holst (but I really only know the Planets).

Love American fiddle music, early folk music, early country and blues. Definitely not jazz, hard rock, rap.

I just love the traditional hymns of my faith!!!

Favorite Books

Oof! I'm an avid reader and it would be hard to list everything I love.

I love old children's books that are excellent stories written in beautiful language that modern books, even for adults, could not possibly manage.

I love the old tales of love, sacrifice, heroism, amistad, courage, noble character.

I love a beautiful translated version of the Bible.

I love the stories of the saints and martyrs.

I like historical fiction quite a lot and throw in a good murder mystery among the monks and I may not leave my house for a week!

Ohmygosh poetry. But not all of it. I like what I like and dont like what I dont like. Probably my favorite, eventhough he was an apostate, are the religious poems of John Donne.

I love Oscar Wilde so much (even though I didn't care at all for Dorian Gray)! And Howard Pyle!

In non-fiction I very much enjoy reading the American revolution, founding fathers, WWII, original sources, especially journals. Also very early science and scientists.

Not a science fiction fan at all. I have my own private book club. I'm the founder, president, and sole member. I choose a genre/author/whatever I would not typically read and then read a few of those just to broaden my horizons and see if I really do like them. The last one I did was Japanese literature. I only read one book bc it was so unrelentingly long and slow. Now I'm reading science fiction. I read Burrough's Mars series, C. S. Lewis Out of the Silent Planet (but probably won't read the rest of the series) am currently reading The Mote in God's Eye and next will read Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. So far I haven't loved any of them very much. I really don't like The Mote in Gods Eye . . . Its quite lamely written: couldnt possibly accuse it of beautiful prose . . . And I'd quit it but a review has me expecting something big. So I continue to read it. Actually, I select a yes.fit run and read that genre during the length of the run. I need to read faster if I'm going to finish these books by the end of my run. I'll probably never read science fiction again. I hate to say never but . . . Yeah, probably never. My next will be a Sri Lankan author and then after that I hope to do a western theme.

I really enjoyed the Brother Cadfael mysteries and cried at the end of the last one because I knew the author was dead and would write no more.

Summer of the Monkeys was a wonderful book and I cried when I learned that author's story and the reason there aren't more books from him.

I loved To Kill a Mockingbird and still can't figure out why that woman didn't write more!

I do not care for Sherlock Holmes but like Doyle's other books ESPECIALLY The Lost World.

I like a lot of Dickens but writing that makes me think of A Christmas Carol and A Christmas Carol makes me think of The Canterville Ghost and The Canterville Ghost makes me tell you again: I love Oscar Wilde so much!

Believe it or not I really like the Greek tragedies.

Ohmygoodness, of course I loved The Lord of the Rings and I think the most beautiful words I've ever read, aside from love notes from my daughter, is the creation story in The Silmarillion.

I also loved all the Narnia books . . . Which is why I had high hopes for Out of the Silent Planet. But no.

Mark Twain! Loved Tom and Huck! Also A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and The Prince and the Pauper.

Seriously, I'm not nearly finished but I'm quitting anyway.

Favorite Movies

Hmm . . . Favorite movies.

My all-time favorite movies of which I will never, ever, tire and which I could never recommend highly enough: Angel's in the Outfield, 1951 (NOT the 90s remake). Three Godfathers, 1948

In no particular order:

Princess Bride Lilies of the Field High Noon My Cousin Vinnie (though I blush to say so) To Kill a Mockingbird The Fall Ink (don't bother. Not one single person to whom I have recommended this movie has like it. Not one.) Magnificent 7 (though I liked the Kurosawa and Denzel versions, my true love is the 1960) Marcelino Pan Y Vino. Spitfire Grill I tend to really enjoy sports movies and war movies (specifically WWII) not bc I like sports or war but bc, they are always, or at least usually, movies of sacrifice, character, brotherhood, good vanquishing evil, loveable underdog, heroism . . . All things I love.
