Description:

Do you use something besides fabric in place of fabric?

Let me explain. Have you seen the Koolaid Jammers packages made into bags? They are not fabric but they are sewn together as if they were fabric. I have named these alternative textiles.

I am sure that there are lots of other things out there that would fit into this catagory. Many consumer items are packaged in heavy plastic or laminated paper. What can we use??? What posibilities lie in shipping cartons or construction materials?

Using our alternitive textiles, we will each make something for our partners. We can try to tailor this to our partners profile but this is not a requirement for this swap.

Anyone with a rating of 4.5 or better and newbies with a completed profile are welcome to join.

This swap be international so that we can see alternitive textiles from around the globe.

Please leave a comment if I need to clarify anything.

i don't think i have time for this particular swap, but i get a crochet 'n more newsletter every month and i tried to find the actual tote they made out of plastic bags (like from the grocery store) but i DID find how to prepare them for the tote. which is just as good, you probably can find a million patterns out there for the tote itself... this is way cool, very strong and durable. here ya go:

oh, and like it says, you just tie 'em up and up and up and then you have your 'yarn'. and use a big hook of course!

:-D

I don't have the exact link (though I'll try to get it for you) but at Crafster there is a tutorial on how to make "material" out of grocery store bags . It involves opening them up, layering them and then ironing them through some type of cloth. It was very interesting and the items made with it were virtually indestructable!

Found it..hope it helps!

This is SUCH a great idea - I was just looking at how to make candy wrapper bags yesterday. I'd love to sign up, but for me it's not really enough time to collect items and sew ( too much juice to drink in 2 weeks!). Would you consider making the send-by date mid or late October?

moowee 09/10/2007 #

Would any one object to an extended date? I did not think of the time that it would take to collect materials. If no one objects by Wed evening I will move the date out.

I saw a girl with a purse made of gum wrappers. It was adorable. She said it was a gift. Darn it. I so wanted one.

No one complained so I am going to extend the dates to give folks plenty of time to gather textiles.

I am looking forward to this - what a great chance to try out some new techniques I've been thinking about!

I has some free time today and experimented with fusing plastics. Many failures, but eventually a grand success. I am very pleased with my results.

Oh wow! I am never ahead of the game with swaps. I usually ruminate until the last moment. But this time...I have finished my project! I love it! Yeah for holidays off from work! I can't post pictures or give many details until I mail it off, but I think it's neat!

Way to go FarStarr! Sometimgs a project just clicks.

I like to be ahead of the game but I am usually mailing close to the deadline too.

Just wanted to warn you that if you are sending to or receiving from ueris, she's bailed out of my last two swaps and left her partners with NOTHING (be she's received).

moowee 10/24/2007 #

I am the coordinator for this swap and ueris is my swap partner. I have been excited to see what someone else would make so . . . . ueris, I have faith in you!!

CupcakeDD 10/25/2007 #

Now that my partner has her present, I can show everyone. I made a "teabag" out of Stash tea wrappers. There's a picture on my Flickr page:

I had a ton of fun with this swap!
