Description:

Evidently, like 5 or 10 years ago, Serendipity Squares were all the rage in the scrapbooking world. Since I was never really into the scrapbook scene back then, the idea of this craft is all new and shiny and inspiring to me! It looks like a really fun way to use a bunch of precioussss paper crap and transform it into even prettier and more precioussss paper crap!

The basic idea is that you take a bunch of paper crap, tear it/cut it/rip it with your teeth, collage it onto a piece of crappy cardstock, embellish with even more of your crappy art supplies, and then cut it up into squares, shapes, strips etc. to use on other things.

Here is a decent link that describes the process

...and another

...and another...

So, who wants to make some of these crap ridden things with me?

Details for swap:

  • Create 2 different serendipity-crappity collage sheets with your eyes open in the regular manner.

  • Create 1 other crappity collage sheet with your eyes closed (i.e. spread out a bunch of paper crap in front of you where you can reach it easily, then close your eyes and tear pieces and place them on your card stock by feel only, no peeking! I do NOT recommend using scissors or other tools with your eyes shut!) Open your eyes and glue the crappy pieces down where they landed (no moving them!). Then, as much as possible with your eyes shut again, do the embellishing part. (Its ok to peek now and then to make sure you aren't stamping your cat or gold leafing your kid or some such).

  • Send your partner: one 4"x6" (10cm x 15cm) post card size chunk of each of the three different serencrappity collages that you made (so, that is 3 different chunks to send). This way, the chunks will be big enough for your partner to see your crappy handiwork, and to either use it as a postcard, or they can cut it into the sizes/shapes that they would like to use once they receive it. (Plus, you should have enough left over for yourself to use too, just in case you would have any separation anxiety over sending off any of your precious crap. Now everybody wins!)

  • Don't tell your partner which one of the three was done with your eyes shut, let them guess! So, when you rate your partner, leave a comment with your guess for the sender, then sender you can give them the answer by responding to the comment on the rating. OK, remember to take some pix of your collages before sending them off so you can recall them when your partner guesses, or randomly number the backs and keep track of which number was the eyes shut one, or some other crappy method that works for you.

(This is a group only swap so you can feel assured that your crap will stay within the loving circle of your sisters. Please swap responsibly and make someone's day by sending your crap on time, bla bla bla)

My poor dog; she's going to end up with glitter on her...again... I just know it.

ChristyC11 04/22/2009 #

This sounds like such fun. I may play with DD tomorrow (eyes open I think) and see what happens

CraftyDeeney 04/25/2009 #

weeee.... on my watchlist. Considering how bad I craft with eyes open, I will laugh til I pee if my eyes closed version comes out all Martha Stewart like. hmmm dilemma - should I clear off the crafting table first or just roll myself in glue and modge podge and then roll on the craft table to see what sticks

(pictures Madeline Kahn in Young Frankenstein - roll in hay, roll in the glitter)

AncientPlanter 04/26/2009 #

It was Teri Garr, not Madeline Kahn, rolling in the glitter, er, hay. And now I'm going to have that line in her voice going through my head all evening!

Chanel 04/26/2009 #
