Description:

I have seen a couple swaps with this theme, but not quite what I'm looking for. Hopefully this idea is not too wacky.

This swap is for a letter written in a simple substitution cipher of your choosing. A substitution cipher is a method of encryption where each letter is replaced by a different letter, number, or symbol. An example is ROT13, where each letter is replaced by the letter 13 letters after it. You also may be familiar with the classic A = 1, B = 2, etc.

For this swap, you will be creating the cipher yourself, not using a pre-existing one (though it's possible that one like yours already exists). Write out a key for your own reference. Take a photo of it or type it up. On a separate sheet of paper, write a letter with the following format, all encrypted:

"Hello.

(10 sentences about anything you want)

  • (first name)"

This is what you will be sending your partner. Do not send the key. Include a note with the swap name and your username without encryption for easy identification (or write it on the top of the letter). But that's it.

It's up to your partner to decrypt the letter. Make it as easy or as challenging as you'd like. They will have "hello" and your first name as a partial key. There are also very easy words to guess with cryptography that will likely be included in your sentences, and will reveal more letters to them.

Write neatly and clearly, especially if using symbols. You can also type. Decorations, extras, etc are not needed.

Please rate a 5 if your partner has sent their letter, even if you can't figure it out. If enough time has passed and you're still stumped, ask them to send the key via email.

Here's another cool link

I will be checking profiles and dropping anyone who seems shady and anyone who doesn't log in within 3 days of assigning partners. No outstanding swaps on dash, no unexplained 1s or 3s. The usual. Will angel but hope I don't have to.

P.S. - swap photo is not a substitution cipher but it looked more interesting

Btw, I would like to do a swap with more challenging types of ciphers if there is interest in this swap.

I was thinking of hosting a swap for a Playfair cipher. Something decorated like this one from Enola Holmes: https://www.reddit.com/r/SherlockHolmes/comments/og9aqr/cipherfromenola_holmes/

@kellyr I think that's a really fun idea! I definitely encourage you to do so. That's the kind of thing I'd private swap for if the swap dates just ended up not working out for me

So often when I see a unique swap, it is yours! I swear I'm not stalking you, I just saw this pop up on the left and was like hey, right up my alley!

@jessicapariah are you kidding? I love seeing you in my swaps!
