Description:

I have become a weaving fanatic! It is so satisfying to lay down strips in two different directions and discover new designs and patterns.

For this swap, use strips of paper to create a note card. Your strips can be any width and length, your design can be just a small patch (or several?) or cover the whole front. There can be other elements added if you like, or just let your weave be the focal point. You can use any type of paper, any color(s), and either same or different widths. The beauty of weaving is the incredible diversity and the ability to completely alter the design with just a few adjustments. (This is a great way to use some of those bits of paper you have been hoarding...) 🙄

Once your card is finished, write a note inside for your partner about weaving. This can be short few sentences, or a longer letter describing how weaving tells a deeper story. Send on time, rate promptly.

I think most people have some experience with paper weaving from childhood, but even if you are a total newbie, it is easy to do. Start with the warp, which is the up and down strips. I usually use a piece of washi tape to adhere these strips to a table so they stay generally how I want them. Then take the weft pieces and go under the first warp strip, then over the next one, under, over across the warp. On the next row repeat the process starting with over the first strip, then under, over, under... If you want you can glue the pieces as you go, but I usually wait until it is finished and all snugged together. Remove the washi tape and trim to the size you want before gluing it to the card front.

I learned to weave paper with the warp made from a sheet cut in strips to within an inch of the top. Once glued, it's easy to trim off the top. Sometimes I brush Mod Podge over the back or front to glue the final sheet. Experiment with a scrap of paper first.

This webpage shows how to weave twill and chevron patterns that work nicely with paper cut in thinner strips, like 1/4-inch inch.
