Description:

As a librarian, I get a thrill out of making book recommendations. Who doesn't love sharing their favorite books? Another part of my job is to make book lists based on themes and I've never done it with Cliches.

Your job is to make five book recommendations for your partner based on at least one of the following cliches. You can have all your book recommendations under one header or you can use multiple ones. If you really want to challenge yourself, make a book recommendation for each one. You are still only required to do five.

This swap is SENDER'S CHOICE. It always surprises me when someone makes a book recommendation for a genre or subject that I had never given much thought too. I've found some really great books this way. Because it is sender's choice, you can get started right now!

The cliches:

  • All Bent Out of Shape

  • Crazy as a Loon

  • Fickle Finger of Fate

  • Just the Tip of the Iceberg

  • Memory Like an Elephant

  • Rough Around the Edges

  • Thick as Pea Soup

  • Wipe the Slate Clean

For example: Rough Around the Edges would make me recommend Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. These two authors decided to send a manscript back and forth, trading chapters. They each had their own protagonist and had to respond to the chapter that was sent to them. It's charming but clear that more than one voice is at work in the novel. I liked the book story better than the movie even though the movie smoothed out all the edges. The book itself is an offbeat love story. Two teens meet at a rock show and for their own reasons, pretend to be dating. They end up on an all night adventure. It's pretty fun.

To Recap Requirements:

  • FIVE recommendations based on at least one cliche

  • Sender's Choice

  • Tell why the book made you think of the theme and give a brief idea of what the book is about

I check all profiles before I assign partners. This includes ratings, your dashboard, and comments. I will angel if I have too but then you are totally missing out on the chance to tell a captive audience about books you like. That would be ridiculous, right?

Other recommendations for Rough Around the Edges could be:

Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) because the main character is rough around the edges.

OR

A translated version of a book written in your second language. Maybe the translator got it mostly right... but not quite.

OR

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith because even though the main character creates a beautiful world for herself; she lives in one that is definitely rough around the edges.
