Description:

I wonder if there are 5 other players who also love to use decorative novelty napkins in their art.

I would like to do a journal Round Robin if I can find some artists interested.

The main rule is that you must use a decorative/novelty napkin as the background or part of the back ground for the journal pages.

A round robin in the mail is simple enough. Just imagine we are all in the same room, at a craft retreat. Hear the ocean waves? If we were all in the same room sitting at a round table working on our art, when we were done we would just pass the journal to the person on our right when we were done with our pages. But in reality we are miles apart. To create the round robin you will mail a journal to the same partner each time. Eventually the journal will be returned to you.

To insure the safely of our journals. You are required to use Tracking, aka delivery confirmation. It is now free with all packages. If you go to the PO the number will be on your receipt. I use online printable postage from paypal. so the website gives me the number

Please consider getting some free padded flat rate envelopes from the USPS.com. They are free, creating an account is free, getting them sent to you is free. It cost $6.75 no matter what it weighs.

Please agree to work on the journals you receive and mail them off withing 2 weeks time frame to keep the swap moving. You mail mail two together if you get 2 journals in a short time. The flat rate padded envelopes come in very handy at this point.

I do reserve the right to remove players who have might effect the joy and timeliness of this fun swap.

TeaRoll 07/ 8/2016 #

For the journal that we use for this, it should be one that we can glue napkins in? Or can we make a journal of like 10 napkins?

AZmom875 07/ 8/2016 #

Very good question TeaRoll.

You need a journal that you can clue napkins to the paper pages, and create something from the napkins as part of the background.

midteacher 07/10/2016 #

From my experience, it works better if you use a journal that is not spiral bound. Here is an example of the napkin journal I made last year:
https://plus.google.com/photos/116475306870159229859/albums/6215781167820268817
A spiral journal can be used, it is just trickier to get the napkin down on a 2-page spread.
The journal I used is carried at Micheals Craft store: Fabriano:
http://www.michaels.com/fabriano-ecoqua-notebook-5.8x8.25/M10276780.html?dwvarM10276780color=Wine#q=fabriano&start=1

This is ONLY to give you an idea! You do not have to purchase it.

AZmom875 07/10/2016 #

Thank You Midteacher. I am amazed at how neat your napkins adhered to you pages. What glue did you use? They look like very nice paper.

The Fabriano journal is very reasonably priced. $3.99. That was surprising. And with Michael's always having a 40% or more off coupon. I am going to go shopping soon. I have not actually every made a napkin journal, but I have made many napkin atcs.

midteacher 07/14/2016 #

Found out today Micheals has discontinued the Fabriano journals (well of course)! So I found some comparable by Artists Loft in the art pad section. They come in a 2 pack for 3:99 (They are white with a stitch binding and look like they have paint splattered on the cover).

The Fabriano journals are avail 2 other places:
http://www.dickblick.com/products/fabriano-ecoqua-notebooks/#photos (you want the 74863 -)
Here it is in black:
http://www.dickblick.com/items/74863-2025/

Search Amazon for: Fabriano ecoqua Notebooks staplebound blank 5.8 in. and you can get some for 3.28:

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nbsbnoss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=fabriano+ecoqua+Notebooks+staplebound+blank+5.8+in.+

And there is the Strathmore Mixed Media Softcover Journal 5.5"X8"-32 Sheets

Again, just suggestions. These are actual art journals which hold up against paint, textured mediums, and anything you want to add to the page that has some weight to it. In my experience, Dollar store blank books just don't work for this type of Round Robin.

midteacher 07/14/2016 #

To get my napkins down:
1. Carefully peel apart the layers of the napkin. You want the top, single layer. Lay asside.
2. cover entire spread using a glue stick, paying class attention to the corners, edges and seam.
3.carefully line the napkin up with the bottom edges.Lay it down gently then go over with a brayer, rolling from the bottom to the top trying to avoid wrinkling (there will be some). You can reposition the napkin or get rid of large wrinkles by pulling up on it BUT ONLY IF YOU DID NOT ALREADY BRAYER OVER THE NAPKIN.
It doesn not have to be perfectly flat! It does not have to be perfectly aligned! It's an art journal, after all!

AZmom875 07/14/2016 #

Great help with your info on the way you got the napkins to look so neat and thick. Yes thick.

I ordered a journal from Blick, and a few other things I could NOT live without.

Babsmomof5 07/16/2016 #

Not to be dense here, just want to make sure I understand correctly...do we do all the napkin backgrounds prior to sending this out...or does each participant add their own napkin background as it circulates? I am SO excited by this swap...napkins and tissue paper are some of my FAVORITE backgrounds, and you can find really pretty ones super cheap!

Babsmomof5 07/16/2016 #

Also, I use mod podge with mine. I've never tried the glue stick Breyer technique, but I'm going to with my next project...that would be much less messy and much easier to maneuver if you are aiming for a particular area as your main focus to get positioned properly! Another neat trick...Choose a napkin with a large (or small) focal point that you like separate the layers, discarding the bottom two white ones. First spread a layer of mod podge on your base, then add your napkin. Gently press and smooth. Let dry (doesn't take long.) While its drying take another napkin, using ony the top layer, and cut out the focal image you chose. Now use hot glue to cover your image on your base...work quickly so the glue stays hot. Adhere your cut out image onto the hot glue. It doesn't have to be perfectly smooth, but it does need to be well adhered to the hot glue. Now apply another layer of mod podge over the raised image. It will blend it in, and make it look like a seamless 3D image!

AZmom875 07/16/2016 #

It was my thought that EACH participant when it was their turn would use a napkin as the background of the pages they create. I was thinking I might give some napkins to each person to keep too.

I was not planning to add the napkins to the pages of my journal. I do think Midteacher was helping us see how nice her napkins came out when she used the better journal. Better and it is cheaper than most journals.

AZmom875 07/16/2016 #

We now have 5 other players besides myself, and one person watching. I am going to send a pm to the group for last call. Because I want to close the swap and dont want to get the round robin too big.

AZmom875 07/19/2016 #

I got my order from BLICK. The fabriano journal does have nice paper.

AZmom875 07/19/2016 #

This swap is closed as I wanted to limit it 6 players. The mail by date has not changed. If you want to create a napkin journal please contact me for my mailing info and I will get your journal into rotation. I will mail it off with another journal swap.

The above is a chart that might help you keep track of the journals you have worked on, the mailing order and who has worked on the other journals. For instance when I work on Fabric Friends journal FF, I will high light the FF, and X it out when I mail it off. This is how I keep track of the swaps.

Babsmomof5 07/22/2016 #

I just found some of the coolest napkins, I can't wait to use them! BTW, if anyone would like to create extra pages in my journal, please feel free!
