Description:

Why are cover songs so much fun? Sure, everyone likes to sing along to Gloria Gaynor proclaiming her autonomy in the epic "I Will Survive" - but it's so much better when it's the guys from Cake rocking out in her place...

This swap is an opportunity to put all your favorite cover songs on a CD and swap them out for some you may have never heard or had no clue exsisted. Ever heard Bob Dylan covered by a Mexican garage band? Have a soft spot from Johnny Cash's cover of "I Wont Back Down" (with Tom Petty singing back up)? Or your favorite local band doing a lounge version of "Tainted Love"...

Each participant will swap a CD of their favorite cover songs with two other people (so be prepared to burn and mail two separate copies of your mix). It can be themed around a topic (cheatin' songs, songs about chickens) or around a band (all covers of The Ramones)or it could be a collection of your favorite cover songs, period.

A great resource for locating cover songs can be found at:

http://coversproject.com/

Start with a minimum of 10 songs and the rest is up to you.

Happy swapping & rock on!

Can we use mash-ups and remixes as well as covers?

user1078 05/16/2006 #

A remix by the band who first wrote/recorded the song would probably not work with the idea of the swap, as my intent was that this would be a swap of bands covering other bands songs... put anything on your mix that you feel goes with that theme. I'm sure it'll be rocking.

I just got to thinking ... I have about two covers that have bad language in them (ie, "bitches", "shit", "F***",). Being that most of the participants will be women, do you think I should just omit the two songs (covers of rap songs, of course) or put them at the end with a warning? I don't want to get any crummy ratings for language content.

I'd hope people wouldn't give bad ratings just because they don't like something they received in a swap. Do they? I can see a bad rating because minimum requirements for a swap weren't met or swap was never received (even then could be debatable since we don't control the postal service), but because I didn't like some music? I'd say use your own best judgement.

why would women care more about "bad" language than men?
