In this swap we will be creating surprise balls filled with Halloween.

We will have 1 partner and the ball should be a good size.....large orange to grapefruit size. It should contain 10 to 20 items…..candy, toys, craft items, embellishments, etc.....all of Halloween theme. Think holiday cracker prizes but with a Halloween theme. Let's try to amaze our partner with what they find inside. Make your ball and its contents something you would LOVE to receive. :-)

To make a surprise ball you will need a roll or 2 of black and / or orange crape paper streamer. Then starting at one end of the crepe paper, roll the paper around one gift item at a time, enclosing each item inside the paper until you've formed a ball with the surprises enclosed inside. Not using too much but enought to secure it well, glue the end of the crepe paper to the ball to finish. Decorate the outside of the ball so as to hide the glued spot. These will have to be shipped in a small square box so as not to be flattened.

Here is a pretty good tutorial, but all surprises should be inside the center of the ball and there is no real need for the plastic ornament center. Anyway, she has good pictures to explain how to wrap the ball.

Wow! I've never heard of a 'gift ball'! Although I've never done one of these, I'm excited to do so!!!

Is it ok that we choose maybe black and green instead of black and orange if we still decorate it in a Hallows theme?

I see no reason why your surprise ball can't be black and green.......matter of fact, I think it is a welcome change to be not so traditional.

This sounds like a blast - what's the minimum dollar value? Not including shipping, of course. I'll spend however much it takes me to make a great gift ball but I'm just curious if there's a minimum.

I hadn't thought of a minimum dollar value. I just figured wrapping 10 to 20 small objects would be challenge enough. :-)

Should we maybe make it about 4.00?

Candy should be individually wrapped, and that comes in bags. But you wouldn't wrap the whole bag......maybe 3 or 4 pieces.

Then the rest of the objects / surprises might be embellishments and fun Halloween items. Again those come in packets of more than 1. And again you wouldn't necessarily wrap the whole lot of them. And maybe your partner has a fantastic vintage button in her stash.....what is the price on that?

How about we say "Think" $4.00 or more worth of prizes, creating a very nice surprise ball....one that you would be super happy to receive.

Great idea - I could actually start this now as Halloween stuff is already in the stores - crikey - when will they let us finish summer before they do that? :-)

Would it be OK to wrap it in yarn instead of crepe paper, if our partner's a yarnie? I did a magic yarn ball swap last year for Halloween that was a total treat and a lot of fun to make and send.
