Description:

I saw a swap recently for a cabinet of curiosities, and thought it was a fabulous idea. The only problem with it is the issues of sending some of the items through the post. Customs can be very temperamental about some things!!!

I thought it would be fun to do our own Natural World version of a Cabinet of Curiosities. So, you will send your partner a selection of at least five goodies to make a start on their cabinet – if this proves popular we could have a few swaps to really build this up.

Imagine you are walking around the Natural History museum – what would you see?

Butterflys and insects, antique photos or illustrations, pressed or dried flowers, seeds, or seed pods, shells, rocks, or crystals, exotic goodies from far of places. The only limit is your imagination!! You do not need to send actual items – by this I mean that for example, if you want to send a butterfly – you do not send an actual butterfly, but you could send a butterfly notecard, or a butterfly pendant etc. This gives us a lot of leeway on what we send to avoid those pesky customs issues!!

If you do want to send actual natural items (maybe shells, or seed pods etc.) then this is of course welcome, but just double check the customs regulations for where you are sending too. I believe the US is very strict on bird related items – so no feathers etc., while Australia is strict on seeds, and seed pods. However, you could send a metal bookmark in the shape of a feather, or an image of a seed pod on an ATC.

Handmade is also very welcome on this swap, which gives us even more leeway – the only rule here would be that no more than 3 of the 5 items can be handmade.

I am giving plenty of send by time on this, so we can really explore/discover/create.

Usual group rules apply. Any questions/comments please PM me or comment below.

This USA post office link gives useful information about the regulations for each country about what you can and can't send.

Is there a link to the swap that you are modeling this one after? I'd love to see more info so I know what an actual cabinet of curiosity is Thanks so much! Gabi
