Description:

For this swap we're going to be creating our prints using National Geographic magazine pages that have been altered with Citra Solv. If you haven't tried this technique yet, I highly encourage you to give it a go. The Citra Solv breaks down the ink on the pages and yields wonderful results, and some very interesting papers that can be used in collage, mixed media, or for our purposes, monoprinting.

Here's a link to the tutorial on Citra Solv's website. I have read several times that this seems to only work with older Nat Geo magazines; anything from at least 1990 until present day may not work. In the tutorial I've linked to, the Citra Solv is applied to the pages straight from the bottle, but you can also use a foam brush or paintbrush if you wish. You'll want to be fairly generous with the amount of Citra Solv you use to get more dramatic results.

Once you've altered your Nat Geo pages and let them completely dry, use them as the printing surface for your Gelli/gelatin prints. By starting with such interesting papers to begin with, we should end up with some fantastic and wonderfully abstract prints.

The details:

  • 3 prints each for 2 partners (6 prints total).
  • Prints must be at least 6"x6", and can be round, rectangular, or square.
  • Sender's choice in color, theme, and style.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments. I've done this Citra Solv technique a few times and can hopefully give a bit of hands-on advice.

Thanks to @LahDeeDah for suggesting this great swap idea!

The swap graphic is one of my own Nat Geo/Citra Solv prints (prior to using on the Gelli plate).

Waaaaa! My mom had about thirty years worth of National Geographics. I just called to see if I could have some of the old ones and she said she gave them away to a nursing home. CRAP!

bluemonkeymama 06/17/2014 #

Oh man, that stinks! I've seen them at our local Salvation Army for a quarter a piece. I got quite a few that way, and my ex also found a bunch in the dumpster a few years ago.

Thanks. I'll start looking around to see if I can find some somewhere (after I've finished pouting).

Time to go raid some nursing homes...

LahDeeDah 06/25/2014 #

Well. The only interesting thing I've found at the nursing home is chocolate pudding. Would anyone be interested in swapping NG pages for fifty-dollar bills?

user6937 06/26/2014 #

$50 bills? I'll send some, lol!

LahDeeDah 06/26/2014 #

Sorry! I found someone who will trade them for ten bucks a pop! I've gotta take the more economical route. :-)

@LahDeeDa just sent you a pm. if you get it soon, send me your address!

Susi 07/ 6/2014 #

I got my pages done yesterday. Some were completely covered by the paint, but They still smell like citra solv, lol! I do have some that show the altered page as well as the print!

Susi 07/ 6/2014 #

Hey, just a note... if the pages have to be at least 6X6, they can't be rectangular, lol! I cut mine 6x6, but I gad to slightly fold them to fit my envies, but they still look (and smell) good!

bluemonkeymama 07/ 7/2014 #

Haha, @Susi , you are right! 6"x6" can't be a rectangle. Glad to hear you got your pages done. I personally love that Citra Solv smell.
