BOM Growing our Garden Quilt

10-14-12 thru 11-14-12

This is a new series of quilt blocks 12 ½” X 12 ½” each with a white (print or plain) background.

Each month the blocks will have two things on them as listed below. These will all be items found in a garden. Each month will be sender’s choice on the colors used on that month’s items as long as they always use a white (print or plain) fabric as the background.

You may assemble your block by paper piecing, with regular pattern pieces, appliqué or even embroider that month’s items on your block. You can even do a combo of methods! Please do not send a 12 ½”X 12 ½” cut of printed fabric with that month’s items on it. There must be sewing involved. Try to fill up as much of the block as you can with that month’s items and leave at least a ¼” seam allowance around the outside. You may add other things to the block besides that month’s items as long as there is at least one each of the designated items for that month on the block.

--1 partner a month

--1 block a month (12 ½”X 12 ½”) allowing at least a ¼” seam allowance around the outside of your block

October = at least one rose and a butterfly

November = any tree or fern and any other flower or plant (senders choice)

December = a poinsettia and any other item senders wants

January = a park bench and a flower or plant of senders choice

February = garden path (stone, wood, dirt, senders choice) and a flower or plant (senders choice)

March = any garden animal or creature (snail, frog, rabbit, squirrel etc) and any flower or plant (senders choice)

April = bird and any other flower or plant (senders choice)

May = a bumble bee and any other flower or plant (senders choice)

June = a garden fence or ornament (example: gnome, birdbath, trellis, gazebo, koi fish pond, etc) and any flower or plant (senders choice)

July = watering can and sun or sunshine

August = any green leafy plant (senders choice) and a basket

September = garden tool and any flower or plant (senders choice)

I am looking forward to assembling all these blocks together with a pretty sashing to make a quilt just for me!

I will probably be doing hand embroidery on some of these blocks because I have some great embroidery patterns with lots of garden items and flowers.

Embellishments are welcome, too! I'm thinking of some pretty butterfl buttons I have.

input, suggestions are welcome.......

does this swap seem too difficult or too specific? If we don't get 3 people signed up by due date we'll cancel this series.

my feedback for you: I have never PP or appliqued(?) so that's the reason I won't sign up although I like the idea of a monthly block. Also there isn't as much choice in fabric here in Europe as in the States.

@Alphenstamp Oh but you don't have to paperpiece or applique, those are just some of the options on making these blocks...you can make the block anyway you want as long as it covers the theme and is 12 1/2"X 12 1/2".

This sounds like a lot of fun. I will have to pull out ideas that I have been saving.
