Though you don't like magic/fantasy, I'd suggest The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern to you, which by the sounds of The Prestige, is similar to that. I don't like historical fiction, but fell in love with the book, it's beautifully written. You mentioned you enjoy time traveling stories, may I suggest you check out The Man in the Empty Suit by Sean Ferrell. Awesome book!

I read Les Miserables in 6th grade, long before it was ever a musical (my dad "made" me read classic after classic - some I loved and some I didn't)! And I've always loved a couple of the film versions, particularly the one in the 1970s with Anthony Perkins as Javert and Richard Jordan as Jean Valjean. I also really liked the miniseries with Gérard Depardieu. I, too, like French stuff - not as much as you, obviously, I'm more of a Scotophile (is there such a term? Scottish as opposed to "Anglophile")! I loved your "good deed" - I've never heard of it, but it sounds like a wonderful thing to do! It would be nice to start it around here! And my habit to break is just like yours! I, too, want (need) to get more sleep and go to bed earlier! Loved your letter - and the little smash book "kit." Thanks!
